THE GREEN KNIGHT
11th Sept 21
The Green Knight - By David LoweryThis film I've been running around and checking every day on google for its release but due to covid they kept pushing the dates any time I neared it. But finally, I got my hands(or should I say eyes) on it and watched it in 2 parts which I normally do. The film is about a coward knight played by Dev Patel who faces the greatest knight man has seen in a duel which he calls 'a game' and in an instant, the coward becomes the most celebrated person in the kingdom. But this fame comes at a price that Dev will have to pay 1 year later and that is what this film is about. Filled with lots of ideas and metaphors.
Needless to say, the film absorbs you from the first minute. Which is normal for someone(like me) who is familiar with David's previous work. But this film doesn't make you wait for a beat as much as Rooney Mara did in 'The Ghost Story', instead, it moves at a pace of a snake, taking twists and turns, jump scares, bites you and then finally sheds its' skin and becomes something completely different as it vanishes into the depths of your mind.
The camera work is immaculate, needless to say, it comes with each of his films, what I found nuanced is how the camera pans slowly in a full circle to show the passage of time like the camera was mounted on the 'second' hand of an analogue watch. The screenplay was exceptional, especially Alicia's monologue of the colour 'Green' and its impact on our lives. The film is divided into chapters and the font of the chapters were not readable. Could have relooked that.
Performances were brilliant, even the cameo by Joel Edgerton and his kiss with Dev Patel. Alicia Vikander however brief lit up the screen every time. Barry Keoghan was a surprise for me, because the moment he entered the frame I knew something was not supposed to go Dev's way but he had a good run in the film.
Personally, I would say if you have the time, watch it, but if you don't it can wait for some other film that's on your radar.
A SOUP of folklores prepared by a Michelin star chef- A Green Knight.
